Outside of places like DailyKos, TalkLeft and others, I don't know if there are people who realize what a dark day this is. It's not just that women with control over their own bodies are now an endangered species: it's the rights of everyone.
I had a hard time getting the message about a day like this across to swing voters during the election. It was hard for them to imagine that our lives and our country's principles could be fundamentally changed because of GWB being in office, with the power to nominate SC justices.
Now, of course, there are more people who can imagine it. The war has gotten some folks to wake up, of course. But I think there's something else, and I think it may be our only hope right now...
I think the shift we've seen in Independents' support for Bush (as well as some Republicans') started in earnest during the Terri Schaivo mess. For the first time, people got to see what kind of control Bushco and their ilk really want to have over our personal lives -- and resoundingly, they didn't like it.
I think James Dobson's big mouth was a help to the cause of privacy rights in that situation; with citizens realizing that he and his Religious Right cronies truly believe they have a President who will do what they want. That scared folks. And it can scare them again.
So I was glad to see Dr. Dobson mouthing off right away on the next SC nominee. I would like to see this get as much press as possible, and more for the statements of Dr. Dobson's colleagues and supporters.
They do not represent the majority in this country, and the clearer they make their positions, and their connections to the President, the more the silent part of the majority will stand up. Or so I think. Hope. Pray.
